Traditional Kitchens

A traditional kitchen should have a classic, timeless feel that can provide your home with a warm and welcoming space that the whole family can enjoy, whilst spending time together relaxing and enjoying home cooked meals.

Traditional kitchen designs can suit any type of properties ranging from cosy, country cottages through to more modern style homes. Traditional kitchens should not look dated as, by design, they are built to stand the test of time. They usually feature a variety of wood finishes, such as oak for the cabinet doors and worktops, to create a feeling of warmth. A traditional kitchen can also feature a painted effect finish on the doors, usually in neutral shades or pastel colours, such as sage green, for extra interest and to create a calm and relaxing feel. Using different colours can create different atmospheres, light colours or light woods will provide more of a cottage feel to a traditional kitchen whilst dark colours or dark woods can be very striking in large traditional style kitchen.

Traditional kitchens look great with either solid wood, laminate or real granite worktops. When choosing a worktop for your traditional kitchen choose one to compliment the colour of the cabinets, if you have dark or light coloured cabinets you could opt for a worktop in a contrasting colour to add some style. If you want to add some texture choose a worktop in a material such as granite, which is very hard-wearing is well suited to traditional kitchen designs.

A traditional kitchen looks fantastic with a Belfast sink, this style of kitchen sink is installed below the worktop with the front of the sink on display. Belfast sinks are usually made from a special hardwearing pottery called 'fireclay'. You should however be aware that glasses and crockery can easily chip on the ceramic surface, so a dishwasher may prove to be a useful addition to your new kitchen. Belfast or Butler's sinks feature a wide, deep design to allow for easier washing and food preparation, and they will look superb in a traditional kitchen design. There are many traditional kitchen sink taps that you can choose to compliment the style of the Belfast sink. Traditional kitchen taps usually feature a cross-head style design. Most traditional kitchen taps have a chrome finish but some have more of a bronze finish for a more authentic feel.

Traditional kitchens look more authentic when modern appliances are hidden from view so make sure you opt for integrated fridge/freezers, washing machines and dishwashers, this will also create a more streamlined look. For more storage space think about using the full height of the kitchen so you can store items away that are seldom used. For the finishing touches in a traditional kitchen you could display some old-fashioned plates and ornaments in glass fronted cabinets to enhance the overall traditional look.
